What the Redwoods Taught Me About Marriage

What the Redwoods Taught Me About Marriage

June 09, 20252 min read

This week, I can’t stop thinking about the Redwood Forest—my son and his new bride just visited, and the photos they shared took my breath away. These majestic trees don’t amaze us because they grew fast… they awe us because they’ve stood strong for centuries.

It made me think: that’s what I want for marriage.

Not fast.

Not flashy.

But rooted. Steady. Enduring.

And then life handed me the perfect contrast. We’ve been preparing to sell my childhood home—sorting through a lifetime of memories, old toys, photo albums, notes tucked in drawers, and traditions that shaped six children.

At one point, I told my sister, “I feel like I’m on another planet.”

She said, “It’s like we stepped back 50 years.”

She was right.

I was standing in the legacy of two good people who poured everything they had into a home, a marriage, and a family. It wasn’t perfect, but it was powerful.

As my own nest is nearly empty now, I find myself reflecting deeply:

It’s never about one big moment.

It’s the small things. The road trips. The inside jokes. The traditions. The “we’ll do that someday” moments that only happen if we make them a priority now.

And through it all—don’t lose each other.

The connection in marriage can so easily get lost when we’re focused on kids, work, money, and timelines.

But like the redwoods, marriage is built one day at a time—with intention, commitment, forgiveness, and love.

And one day, you’ll look up and realize:

You’ve created something deep and wide and beautiful.

So if you’re in a season of struggle, or you’re just feeling a little disconnected, please know:

  • You’re not alone.

  • You have the power to change things.

  • And you have my belief in you.

Whether you’re rebuilding or recommitting, you’re capable of making your marriage strong and sacred.

Let’s grow something lasting. 🌲

Together.
